In an episode of “Behind the Velvet Rope with David Yontef” Podcast, the third place winner of season 19 of “Voice” spoke about his single “Grow Up” with Shelton. Flanigan said he heard the song and thought it was “just z[lt] right” for him, but he and Reviver Music’s David Ross decided to “throw it at Blake” to “see what he thinks.”

“[Shelton] was kind enough to say – I mean I have the text on my phone somewhere – but he just said, “Hey man that song sounds great. Do you mind if I jump on it with you?'” Flanigan shared, adding, “I was like, ‘Oh my God! What’s up?!’ I actually felt like you did too much for me man. But he’s just that kind of guy. I do not even know. It is hard to explain.”

So it turns out Shelton was driving through Nashville when Flanigan was recording there and they made it happen.

“I just believe in working hard and trying to be the best person you can be. The more you get to know a guy like Blake, the more he becomes a thoroughly good person, and it’s nice to meet that in Hollywood,” Flanigan said.

He also said that Shelton’s wife and “Voice” coach Gwen Stefani is also “super cute,” and that they’re just “super nice, nice people.”

“They are a great couple. When you see them together, you really get it,” Flanigan said.

Flanigan said The Voice gave him a “really nice gift.”

Flanigan spoke at length about how he’s been in the music industry for a while when he happened to perform for an open mic night that happened to be a scouting event for “The Voice” — and the rest is history. And after struggling for so long, he realizes what a “really nice gift” he’s received from the show.

“I just have to take a moment and always find only the deepest gratitude of the universe for the opportunities I’ve gotten into because … there’s a million people who could do what we all do. And sometimes you just have to slow down and say wow, like right here, right now, as far as a gift like this goes,” Flanigan said.

He went on to say that he “really never believed” he would make it big, so he “quit[ped] looking” for that kind of success. He also never saw himself as a singer and was blown away by the level of his singing talent during his season of The Voice.

Flanigan said he didn’t really start believing he could make a deep run on the show until he was rescued by America and realized he really needed to “amplify” it.

“This is a very serious gift from America. You know, I took it very seriously…that was the turning point…that was the point where I started believing [I could go farther]. That’s when I started believing in myself, I think,” Flanigan said.

He said he knew about a “grassroots” artist who “slept in tents and cars” and “totally [his] Herz” that he “would never achieve something like that”, having recorded a song with Blake Shelton so far is “just a really nice gift”.

“The gift that ‘The Voice’ has given me is like once in a lifetime,” Flanigan said.

The Voice returns in fall 2022. With no spring 2022 season, it marks the first time in the show’s history that it will only air one season per year. There’s no official word yet on which coaches are returning.
