Latin singing sensation and former “Voice” coach Shakira has reached a custody agreement with her ex, soccer star Gerard Pique, and plans to move from Spain to Miami, Florida with their sons. according to Reuters and TMZalongside other news outlets.
Here’s what you need to know:
Shakira & Pique have reached a custody agreement
In a statement released to multiple news outlets, Shakira and Pique announced that they have reached a custody agreement for their two sons, Milan, 9, and Sasha, 7.
The explanation is:
We have a custody agreement. Our only goal is to provide our children with the utmost security and protection and hope that they can continue their lives in a safe and peaceful environment. We appreciate that your privacy is respected.
A source told TMZ that Shakira is now planning to move closer to her family, saying: “[Shakira and Pique] signed an agreement in what is best for the children – which is her primary focus, and after living in Barcelona for eight years – she and the children will now move back to their long-term home in Miami, where the entire maternal family resides.”
This statement was confirmed by Reuters as part of the custody agreement.
Shakira & Gerard Pique split in June 2022
In June, Shakira and Pique announced their split via statement released to Reuters, who simply said: “We regret to confirm that we are separating. For the sake of our children, who are our top priority, we ask that you respect their privacy.”
For months, the two remained mum about their split, but in September 2022, Pique released a statement via Barca Universal’s Twitter account to blast the paparazzi’s treatment of his children amid the breakup.
“[Since the split] A lot of rumors and allegedly unconfirmed information about the player, his family and his personal and therefore private life have been released. These reports and images not only cause damage to his honor and reputation, but also constitute a grave assault on the rights of his children, whose safety and protection are his greatest concern,” the statement said.
Shakira later opened up about it ELLE in an interview in September 2022 about the breakup, calling it “one of the most difficult, darkest hours of [her] Life.”
“It’s really hard to talk about this personally, especially as this is the first time I’ve addressed this situation in an interview,” the singer said. “I stayed still and tried to process everything. Um, and yeah, it’s hard to talk about, especially because I’m still going through it and because I’m in the public eye and because our breakup isn’t like a normal breakup. And so it was not only hard for me, but also for my children. Incredibly difficult.”
She also confessed that her dream of having “a family forever” was “torn to pieces” and the breakup was “one of the most painful things you can ever go through.”
The singer is also struggling with legal issues related to Spain’s claim that she failed to pay €14.5 million in income tax between 2012 and 2014; Shakira claims she didn’t live in Spain until 2015 and therefore didn’t have to pay taxes there, according to Reuters.
Also via ReutersShakira turned down a plea deal in July 2022 and the case will go to trial. The Washington Post reported in September 2022 that a judge in Barcelona ordered Shakira to stand trial on six counts related to the alleged tax fraud. Prosecutors are asking for more than eight years in prison and a $24 million fine.
