The world’s tallest penthouse at the top of Central Park Tower offers sweeping views of New York City, but is marred by strong winds and a high-pitched whistle.
Known as “The One Above All Else,” the $250 million penthouse features seven bedrooms, nine-and-a-half bathrooms, and 23 total rooms on the 1,550-foot tower overlooking Central Park. The massive building would even allow its occupants to look down on the Empire State Building.
Typically, spaces in such locations are reserved for offices, and the penthouse has faced some unique problems from the strong winds that batter the New York City skyline.
Touring the penthouse, CBS’ Brook Silva Braga noted that the patio was lashed by high winds, especially in winter, which also caused the door to slam hard behind him.
He also pointed out a high-pitched whistle echoing in the penthouse, which the real estate agent attributed to the cold weather, describing it as a “growing pain.”

Architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill, who have designed some of the world’s tallest buildings, realized there was a difference between working in a giant skyscraper and living in one.
Like many tall buildings exposed to strong winds, the Central Park Tower is equipped with a weight at the top that acts as a pendulum, allowing the building to swing in the upwind direction.
While residents may not feel the shifts, with Braga noting he hadn’t felt anything on his two-day tour, Smith and Gill said the fluctuations would be apparent to anyone bathing or swimming in the penthouse.
“It’s a little bit more forgiving in an office building than in an apartment building,” Gill told CBS. “If you have a swimming pool or bathtub full of water, the psychology of watching that movement is a little different.”

NYC residents have complained that the building casts a large shadow across Central Park when the sun moves
While not the tallest building in the world, Central Park Tower boasts the penthouse as the world’s tallest residence at 1,416 feet along Manhattan’s Billionaires’ Row.
The penthouse occupies the top three floors with an area of 17,545 square feet, with an additional 1,433 square feet of outdoor space.
It features a drawing room, observatory, library, media room, breakfast room, kitchen, guest rooms and a private elevator on the first floor alone.
The second level features five luxurious bedroom suites and a leisure area, while the third floor houses a grand ballroom, powder rooms, cloakroom, private study, dedicated catering kitchen and enough space to set up a private gym.
While the Central Park Tower isn’t the tallest building in the world, the penthouse is the tallest residence in the world at 1,416 feet. The building is located on Manhattan’s Billionaire’s Row

In addition to strong winds, the building has also faced complaints from New York City residents, who have criticized its enormous size and the shadow it casts over Central Park.
They said the building ultimately sacrificed the enjoyment of the thousands who visit the park for the few who can actually afford to stay in the tower’s luxury suites.
Almost two years into the project, the 179-unit building still has fewer than 30 full-time residents.
