USTRONIE MORSKIE, Poland — Olena Sirotiuk was on the night train heading east towards the Ukrainian front when she received a call from her 12-year-old son. “Don’t come Mommy,” he said. “They shoot.”
Ms. Sirotiuk, a cleaner living in western Poland, was one of the few women on a train full of men heading back to fight the Russians. She wanted to hide her son Nazariy behind suddenly hostile territory.
