Get ready to be swept up in a rush of nostalgia as you take a look at this conceptualization of Stray as if it were published in 1992.
It’s not uncommon for great games to get a remake after many years to give them a modern look. However, demakes do exactly the opposite: they reinvent modern games as if they were released a long time ago on an older console to create nostalgia. A YouTube channel designed the Stray game as a demake for the Game Boy, and it’s pretty amazing.
64 Bits has created a video that reimagines Stray, Annapurna Interactive’s dystopian puzzle-platformer featuring a cat, as if it were originally released in 1992. Although not a real game to actually play, the three and a half minute video shows animations of what it would look like if it really existed.
Conceived as a side-scrolling platformer, the demake video takes us through “level one” in three phases, from the start of the game when the protagonist is separated from her family, to her arrival in the Dead City.
Of course, the video includes 8-bit music, sound effects, and sprites from the Game Boy era. Anyone who grew up playing Game Boy games will feel a rush of nostalgia upon seeing this demake.
Stray’s Game Boy demake is the eighth video in a series of demake videos created by 64 bits. They have also recently created concept videos for demakes of Elden Ring for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Mass Effect for the Game Boy Advance and God of War (2018) for the original Playstation. They even reinvented Skyrim for Tiger Handheld Electronics, which is hilarious.
Here’s what 64 Bit had to say when explaining the thought process behind Stray’s Demake, as written in the video’s description:
We’ve done our best to capture the style and spirit of the original Game Boy. The colors, restrictions and sound. There’s a lot of inspiration from Prince of Persia and Oddworld Adventures (the Game Boy ports), especially when it comes to gameplay, movement, and audio. We also took inspiration from Alley Cat for DOS.
