The man managed to escape and get back on the main trail, but his Patterdale Terrier went missing and additional crews were dispatched by Scarborough and the Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team.
A spokesman for the Scarborough team said: “Working with the Fire and Rescue Service we quickly set up a double rope system to lower John, one of our team members, down to Roxy with dog treats.
“The dog appeared unharmed and was lured into a rope bag before John and Roxy were pulled back onto the top of the rock so Roxy could be reunited with her relieved owners.

“In a great example of Working Together (JESIP), we were grateful for the fire and EMS scene lighting that turned a dark, wet, foggy night into daylight, for clearing the bushes from the rock edge, and for helping get John and Roxy back from the site.
“We had sixteen team members working for three and a half hours. Roxy didn’t seem any worse for her adventure.’
Roxy was finally brought to safety around 8pm yesterday, with emergency crews using dog treats to aid in her recovery.
