Tim Minchin reveals a surprising secret about how he created a hit musical after the blockbuster success of Matilda

Following his tremendous Broadway success with Matilda and Groundhog Day, Tim Minchin has revealed the surprising formula for creating a hit musical.

The comedian, 47, said for a film to be successfully adapted into a stage musical, it needs to come up with a series of thought-provoking ideas.

“I think most musicals aren’t great. I can not see it. What you want is a story with amazing conceptual underpinning,” he told The Herald Sun.

He said part of what made his musicals Matilda and Groundhog Day so successful was that they were both based on films that explored philosophical ideas.

“Groundhog Day has an incredible foundation – what is the meaning of life? To change the world, you have to change the way you see the world,” he said.

The Upright star added that his musicals have likable characters that audiences care about and become emotionally invested in.

Earlier this year, Tim revealed how he fulfilled his “lifelong dream” of working with Emma Thompson in the upcoming Matilda film.

The Australian comedian composed the score for the remake of the 1996 Roald Dahl classic starring Thompson as the headmistress Miss Trunchbull.

“She just fell into this role so much,” he told 9Honey of the Oscar-winning British actress.

“I think most musicals aren’t great. I can not see it. What you want is a story with amazing conceptual underpinning,” he said

“I was listening to her singing those songs and I was like, ‘You’re going to kill your voice,’ and she just said, ‘Rahhhh.’

“And I’ve loved her my whole life, so that’s so exciting.”
