The Cleveland Browns have yet to find a commercial partner for Baker Mayfield but the Tennesee Titans have been named as dark contenders for the top spot previously.

Commercial speculation has swirled around Mayfield since the Browns bought Deshaun Watson in a blockbuster deal. However, Mayfield has yet to have many bites that can lead to some interesting situations. Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports said on You Pod to win the game that more teams would be interested in Mayfield’s services as a free agent if released.

“There is interest in that guy. There are a number of teams interested – maybe up to 10 if he’s a free agent,” said Robinson. “An AFC executive said to me, ‘Let’s open it up and look at a two-year period. Who will need a midfielder in 2023? ‘”

One of those teams? The Titans, who can continue to leave Tannehill after next season with minimal consequences. The 33-year-old former player is expected to earn $27 million in 2023.

Tannehill and the Titans have faced a number of injuries in the wide receiver pool and his output declined last season. He passed 3,734 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions – an extra rate for any midfielder. His QB rating is 89.6, significantly lower than it was two years ago.

Even so, the Titans finished top seed at the AFC but were overtaken in the Division Round by the Bengals – a match in which Tannehill made three interceptions.

“Look at Tennesee. They can knock out Ryan Tannehill after next season,” said Robinson. “There is a way out there for them to get out of that contract. Let’s say Tannehill has a bad season next year. What – won’t they consider their options? “

The remaining patient of the Browns with Mayfield

The addition of Mayfield would be an exciting one for the Titans, who currently have no great backup after Tannehill. The question is whether the Titans are willing to pay Mayfield’s nearly $19 million salary for next season in a single transaction, or whether they will go the other team’s wait route.

While the Browns hunt for Watson and Jacoby Brissett on the roster, the team seems ready to just release Mayfield and take his paycheck.

Browns GM reporters Andrew Berry on March 29 at the NFL Annual Convention. “Baker is a professional player, he has a contract and we have (limited) flexibility whether he is on the list or not. So we don’t really feel compelled to rush into anything that isn’t optimal.”

Mayfield hit just 17 touchdowns with 13 interceptions last season, limping over the finish line with injury as the Browns finished the season 8-9.

Buccaneers is also popular as a destination for Mayfield

Robinson also dismisses the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a potential suitor for Mayfield, noting there will one day be a hole in midfield when Tom Brady finally hangs up his boot.

“Shoot, Tampa and Tom Brady. If they hadn’t just learned in the last few months that they should start thinking about life after Tom… he’d have given them a small window,” says Robinson. “They have no reason to think about life after Tom.”

It’s hard to see a Bucs trade for Mayfield, especially when his deal is only a year away. Much of Mayfield’s future, however, hinged on what the Browns ultimately decided to do with a less prominent commercial market. Titans Commercial Attorney ‘Darkhorse’ for Browns QB Baker Mayfield
