The ball was more or less a character in the classic 2000 film when Tom’s character Chuck Nolan, FedEx executive, survives a plane crash. Nolan then survives on a desert island in the Pacific Ocean, where he lives for a long four years – alone – while Wilson represents the need for human connection. After finally devising a plan for returning home that involves building a raft, Wilson falls into the ocean and sadly swims away. When Nolan returns to Memphis, Tennessee, he finds that he has been pronounced dead and his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) was starring Jerry Lovett (Chris Noth).
Remarkably, Tom was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for the role in 2001 – but lost Russell Crowe in gladiator. The father-of-four previously admitted working with volleyball was a turning point for him – even revealing he heard Wilson’s “dialogue” in his head.
“Yes, when Wilson was born I had a dialogue with him and I heard his — I heard his dialogue in my head,” Tom admitted Weekly entertainment years later. “I went insane because I never had a day off… I was never off-camera for anything. The whole film was point and shoot. I don’t even remember hearing “Action” and “Cut”. You just wander in and out of the frame, and that’s how we shot the film,” he said.
