Toowoomba’s landlord says the tenant left maggots, feces, garbage and sanitary napkins in the house

A landlady has revealed how her house was left covered in feces, pads, maggots and urine by nightmarish tenants.

The Toowoomba home was left in such a state that the cleaning bill is estimated at $30,000 and the landlady is wondering if she will ever rent the property again.

Pictures of the property show the house in a disgusting state with 80 garbage cans and excrement.

The city of Toowoomba has one of the lowest vacancy rates in Queensland at under one percent.

The property was rented for $485 per week with a deposit of around $1,900.

Despite the relatively cheap comparative rent and the intensely competitive market climate, the tenant is on the run and leaves behind a completely devastated property.

The landlady, who chose not to be named, told the Courier Mail the condition she was left in was “too extreme”.

“The maggots. The bowel movement. Used sanitary napkins everywhere… If you’re just dirty or messy, it’s not up to that stage. It’s too much,’ she said.

“This type of destructive behavior causes landlords to stop listing the property on the rental market because the emotional and physical costs of repairing it are too high.”

The Toowoomba woman has now taken the matter to court as insurers refuse to even enter the property until the faeces, maggots and rubbish are removed.

To date, she has incurred nearly $7,000 in expenses after needing a trash can and cleaning supplies to begin the restoration.

The tenant’s belongings remain in the house and she awaits word of her obligations to them.

She also fears the cost could run into the tens of thousands, as equipment like the stove and air conditioners are infested with either maggots or animal feces.

The kitchen cabinets and the rest of the house were pretty much the same, and she says so much water was let out throughout the house that she had to wait weeks before she could even enter.

With a vacancy rate of 0.6 per cent in Toowoomba, the landlady says she’s even more amazed by what has emerged, considering she thinks she’s charging a comparatively cheap rent.

“You’ll find it’s impossible to find anything of a similar size and price in the Toowoomba market these days,” she said.

The property was purchased by the woman in 2015, and with a lack of business, she doesn’t know when — or if — she’ll be able to put it back on the market.

She’s still waiting for appraisers to estimate the cost, but she believes the repair will cost at least $30,000.
