Tottenham are battling Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the race to sign Leicester star Caglar Soyuncu – a player Graeme Souness Spurs urged to re-sign in 2020. He switched agents to find a change.
Soyuncu, 26, has endured a difficult season at Leicester despite making 41 appearances for the Foxes. With his £45,000-a-week (Spotrac) Contract ends in 2023.
Brendan Rodgers is likely to receive the money needed to refresh his squad at Leicester. Selling some of his current stars will help him in that as well. Youri Tielemans will be associated with the exit door this summer.
The mail claim Soyuncu has traded agents to the well-known Wasserman – who also look after Juventus ace Weston McKennie, another goal for the Spurs. Tottenham, Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are all watching him.
Back in 2020, ex-Tottenham man Souness suggested Spurs should look at a player like Leicester defender Soyuncu. He raved about his speed and strength, but also praised his willingness to defend the old-fashioned way.
“In terms of possible solutions, I really like Caglar Soyuncu at Leicester City… (he) is strong, quick and good on the ball, but most importantly he also takes defense seriously.” said Souness in his column with The Times.
Souness urged Tottenham to sign Soyuncu in 2020: Good addition?
Ahead of the 2021/22 season, signing Soyuncu from Leicester would have been a solid move. But a lack of confidence has crept into his defense after a poor campaign. He made a number of mistakes.
Spurs have excellent options at centre-back and while Antonio Conte wants to improve his defence, Soyuncu doesn’t. Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Ben Davies are all better than the Turkey defender.
Given his contract situation and the fact that Leicester only bought him for £19m (Sun) – a small number could be agreed upon.
