Seko Fofana made no effort to hide his surprise when he was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year 2021 by Get France Football News.

“I think it was an easy decision in the end,” explained the site’s lead writer, Adam White when asked why the former Fulham youngster had been picked ahead of Kylian Mbappe, Wissam Ben Yedder, Marco Verratti and others.

“He’s been the most consistent top player in Ligue 1. He manages to be midfield enforcer, creator and dynamo all at the same time.

“It’s pretty incredible.”

Fofana might have been surprised to learn that instead of being one of the superstars in PSG’s ever-expanding galaxy, he had to make room on his mantelpiece.

But anyone who has seen RC Lens in action over the past 15 months would not have batted an eyelid when Fofana took home a well-deserved piece of custom silverware.

Is Seko Fofana the best player in Ligue 1?

There is probably no more complete central midfielder in France at the moment.

Corresponding Jeunes Footeaux, Tottenham Hotspur have caught the eye of Fofana’s barnstorming performances. Spurs reportedly sent a scout to watch the Paris-born 26-year-old in last weekend’s 3-0 win over Champions League rivals Nice.

Newcastle United and Leeds are also keen for a player to make comparisons with them Les Bleus Legend Patrick Vieira.

Looking at the former Manchester City youngster through the Premier League prism, however, there is one other player that Fofana’s exciting all-action display is oddly reminiscent of. A certain Declan Rice.

Like West Ham’s talisman, Fofana is both a ball winner and a ball player. A badass midfield general, a prancing playmaker and an inspirational captain wrapped around a purring V8 engine.

Tottenham have four quality central midfield options these days; Harry Winks, Oliver Skipp, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur. Arguably none of the Spurs quartet is capable of converting defense to attack as efficiently and aesthetically as Rice.

Or Fofana, for that matter.

He has Hojbjerg’s Aggression, Bentancur’s Guile, Skipps Grit and Winks’ Technique. Four players in one. There are certainly worse ways to spend £14m.
