Tottenham Hotspur’s search for a new centre-back has reportedly brought them back to a previous target in the form of Pau Torres.
In fact, according to Alasdair Gold, Pau Torres is the next name on the Spurs shortlist and the Spanish defender could well end up in the Premier League.
Torres has something of an unknown element. After all, he’s never played in English football before but this week we got a glimpse of the player from Luis Enrique.
The Spain manager actually compared Torres to Leeds’ Diego Llorente, explaining that they are two players with similar abilities.
“I know a lot about football and it’s coming [to the Spain squad] because he’s one of the best. He played with continuity. Him as well as Pau [Torres]said Enrique via Soccer Spain.
Enrique says Llorente is as good as Torres and that’s a pretty worrying judgment from Tottenham’s point of view.
With all due respect to Llorente, he’s not a world champion. He narrowly avoided relegation with Leeds and was even heavily criticized in the process.
Well, a player of Llorente’s quality is good enough for a team like Leeds, but Spurs need someone a few notches up in quality.
Of course, Enrique could only have said this about Torres and Llorente to boost the Leeds man’s confidence, but if he really thinks these two are on the same level, maybe Spurs should stay away from Torres.
Tottenham need someone superior in the Premier League and if Torres is even as good as Llorente then he doesn’t live up to the bill.
