Tottenham want £50m ‘brave’ left-hander who Defoe Spurs have urged to re-sign in 2020

Tottenham are one of six Premier League clubs reportedly in the running for Manchester City defender Nathan Ake – a player Jermain Defoe Spurs has urged to sign from Bournemouth back in 2020.

Ake, 27, has struggled to settle down at Manchester City since joining the Bournemouth club in 2020. He only played 40 games – due to injuries and competition from John Stones, Ruben Dias and Aymeric Laporte.

Spurs are reportedly in the running for the Netherlands international’s signing. However, the north London club have competition from five other top sides in Chelsea, Newcastle, West Ham, Villa and Bournemouth.

Earlier claims say Chelsea are keen to bring him back, with City enduring a £50m permanent fee. The likes of West Ham, Villa and Bournemouth may be looking at a loan deal for the ex-Blues star.

Speaking about Ake ahead of his move to Manchester City in 2020, Spurs icon Defoe told the Beautiful Game podcast he would love the Dutch defender to join Spurs. He finds Ake “really brave”.

“I’d like to see him at Tottenham, you know,” said Defee. “He has so much potential. Coming from Chelsea, it was difficult to get into the team there. He went to Watford and Bournemouth paid a large fee for him.

“He’s technically good, Dutch players always are. He scores a lot of goals from set pieces, he’s really brave which is good. One of the nicest guys I’ve met in football, you even let him date your sister.”

Tottenham in race for Ake: Defoe urged Spurs to sign him in 2020

What a signing Ake would be for Spurs. So far, Tottenham’s quest for a left-back has failed. And that despite connections to Alessandro Bastoni, Pau Torres, Josko Gvardiol and many others.

Ake has proven himself in the Premier League. Strong, athletic, excellent in the air but good enough with the ball at his feet to play for both Manchester City and at left-back. £50m is expensive but it’s a perfectly sensible move.
