Retiring with 162 goals in the Premier League, mostly in north London, Defoe dons the Three Lions shirt and enjoys title success at Rangers.

He ended his career ranked ninth in the list of all-time top scorers in Premier League history – with the likes of Thierry Henry, Kane himself, Andy Cole, Wayne Rooney and Alan Shearer, to name a few, just ahead of him .

However, when news broke that Defoe was ending his career as a goalscorer, Kane posted about the forward in his IG story.

“Top striker,” Kane said. “A top guy and someone who gave me some great advice early in my career as well as his number 18 jersey. Happy retirement.”

Tottenham had some top strikers throughout the Premier League era, with Kane undoubtedly at the top of the list.

But Defoe is likely to finish second, although someone like Dimitar Berbatov might have something to say on that, despite leaving Manchester United in unpopular circumstances.

Then there’s former Republic of Ireland international Robbie Keane, who gave an iconic cheer every time he put the ball in the net.

Perhaps the most controversial – depending on which side of the fence you stood on – was Jurgen Klinsmann, who is far from forgotten in north London.

In other news, Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes posts a 10-word Instagram message to fans
