Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg posted Instagram ‘Welcome back’ for Christian Eriksen after scoring on his return to Denmark.

While Denmark suffered a 4-2 defeat by the Netherlands in Saturday’s friendly in Amsterdam, it was Eriksen who grabbed the headlines.

Just minutes after Eriksen took the field to loud cheers from the Dutch crowd, Eriksen scored a brilliant opening shot into the top corner with what appeared to be his first touch.

The last time Eriksen wore his country’s colors, he suffered a cardiac arrest that brought the entire football world to a halt.

After surviving that encounter thanks to the medical staff that day, the 30-year-old would have wondered if he would set foot on the pitch again.

But months later, his first action since that moment of horror was driving away jubilantly after scoring for his country.

It was a moving moment for the player and it was fitting that it took place at the Johan Cruyff Arena, where he had earlier made his name in Ajax colors.

Eriksen currently wears the colors of Brentford in the Premier League but is now proving he can once again compete for a team at the top of the table.

Whether that will happen in the summer depends on whether a team knocks for his services.

Would a certain Mr Antonio Conte, who helped him win the Serie A title at Inter, be interested in bringing him back to Spurs? Well, it remains to be seen.

But to think that these kinds of talks are happening now, after that eventful afternoon at Euro 2020 in June, is quite remarkable.
