Traffic accident kills 7 police officers in southwest Pakistan

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Seven police officers returning home for the Eid holiday were killed in a head-on collision in southwest Pakistan, an official said.

They died on Saturday night at the scene of an accident on a national road in the Khuzdar region of Balochistan province, according to police officer Fahad Khoso.

Khoso said the collision took place between the officers’ vehicle and a truck. The seven men had completed training at the police academy.

In another incident, two soldiers and eight militants were killed in a shootout in the country’s troubled northwest.

The Pakistan Army said late Saturday there was an intense exchange of fire between security forces and militants during the raid on a hideout in South Waziristan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Weapons and ammunition were secured from the killed militants, the army said.

The country has seen a surge in militant attacks since a ceasefire between outlaw group Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and the government ended last November.

The government said earlier this month it would launch a massive anti-terrorist operation across the country to stem the wave of violence.
