Trial against Australian journalist in China over state secrets ends without verdict

SYDNEY — The closed trial in Beijing of an Australian journalist arrested on suspicion of leaking state secrets abroad ended without a verdict on Thursday in a case that has deepened rifts between two countries linked over trade, political interference and military provocation .

The trial of Cheng Lei, 46, a host of the Chinese government’s English-language television news channel China Global Television Network, was held behind closed doors at the No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court in Beijing on Thursday. The court adjourned its judgment at the end of the trial, the Australian Foreign Secretary Marie Payne said Thursday.
