Trump’s first day in court dominated front pages across the country and around the world

The arrest of former President Donald Trump on Tuesday dominated newspaper pages around the world.

Most featured an instantly iconic photo of a blank-faced Trump hunched over a Manhattan courtroom table as he was read out on the 34 counts on which he was charged.

The few terms that made the headlines told most of the story: “Trump arrested,” “34 counts of felonies,” and “pled not guilty.” When he submitted his pleading at around 3 p.m., Trump became the first US President to face a criminal complaint.

The 16-page indictment refers to multiple payouts Trump made in the run-up to the 2016 election.

The most notable, a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels, was combined with a $30,000 payout to a bouncer who was trying to sell information about a child Trump allegedly fathered out of wedlock, and $150,000 dollars to former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

Outside the court, there were disagreements between those who saw his indictment as a weapon of the justice system by overzealous local prosecutor Alvin Bragg and those who wanted accountability for the Trump years, which peaked on Jan. 6.

After his courtroom appearance — the first of what is expected to be many — Trump retreated to his Mar-a-Lago, Florida estate, where later in the day he reached out to supporters to rally support for his upcoming presidential campaign.

The judge overseeing the criminal case has scheduled the next in-person hearing for Dec. 4 — about two months before the 2024 Republican presidential primary officially begins.
