TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson’s Oxfordshire restaurant has been awarded two stars for food hygiene

When TV chef Antony Worrall Thompson competed in season two of I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! He nearly brought ITV1’s hugely popular reality show to a halt by inciting hungry contestants to get up and leave camp after receiving what they saw as insufficient food.

Now he is facing a similar revolt at his Oxfordshire restaurant after being given a new hygiene rating of just two stars out of five. The verdict of the food safety officers made him boil over.

“It’s not normal,” explains Worrall Thompson, 71. “We run a really clean kitchen.”

The Greyhound on Peppard Common, near Henley, is considered a destination for ‘high quality’ dining, with mains costing £20-27 and starters £13. However, inspectors who visited last month gave a verdict “needs improvement” in relation to the “cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building”.

Former Ready Steady Cook star Worrall Thompson says: “Personally, I found it really tough and we’re going to call the inspectors back in a few days.

“We felt that this would not compromise the hygiene of the food. We make the improvements they suggest and everything has been addressed.’ Worrall Thompson’s career hit a stumbling block in 2012 when he was cautioned five times for shoplifting, including wine and cheese, by Tesco in Henley-on-Thames.

Author of a few dozen cookbooks, Worrall Thompson said in 2015 that he was writing a book about shoplifting. “It’s called Why?” he said. “I hope it will be instructive, not how to shoplift, but how to deal with it.”

On “I’m A Celebrity,” Worrall Thompson went through a bushtucker trial in which he had to retrieve ten food stars surrounded by snakes, spiders, and creepy crawlies. Let’s hope these food hygiene stars are less difficult to find again.
