Alexander Volkanovski is eyeing the title but UFC lightweight contender Islam Makhachev thinks he should keep his horses in a bold move.
After his overwhelming win in the main event of UFC 273, Volkanovski told ESPN he was planning on taking on the lightweight title challenge.
“I want that this year. That’s something that I’m looking at next,” Volkanovski told ESPN. “Like I said, while this department [featherweight] are self-categorizing; I’m doing my part, I don’t want any division. But if this division holds, it is because the candidates did not win that number 1 spot. It has nothing to do with me.
“So if [they’re] To do that, I want to be proactive, I’m going to move forward, I’m going to work on my options because I’m not holding anyone back and I’m doing my part. So if people don’t want to do their part, have fun, have these money fights, have these two champ states [fights], do all that while it’s happening. And I think I’m in a good position and a fair position to be two champions. ”
Makhachev to Volkanovski: ‘Hold your horses’
Charles Olivera is the defending lightweight champion and will face top contender Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 next month. Who will fight for the next title remains to be taken in the crowded division but Makhachev certainly has a claim for that right, he shared on social media.
“Hold your horse cowboy. You have a team full of young sharks, more than enough to stay busy. The fight for the LW title is mine,” Makhachev tweeted.
Makhachev is a professional boxer with a score of 22-1, winning the last 10 matches in a row. His last four wins have all come from long distances, including an overwhelming knockout victory over Bobby Green last time out.
Some questions whether Makhachev is ready to shoot Title
However, some have questioned Makhachev’s credentials, with some of his victories falling short of the most impressive opponents. Teammate Michael Chandler believes Makhachev should fight Beneil Dariush, whom he had previously planned to fight prior to his injury.
“Beating Bobby Green won’t get you the title. His fight against Dan Hooker was someone else outside the top 10. His winning record includes everyone outside the top 10 except for Dan Hooker,” Chandler said in an interview with The Schmo. “So I think he and Dariush need to fight. I think it was a great match. I think their strong suits complement each other very well. Both are pullers. But the UFC is the best promotion on the planet. They know what they’re doing. They know how to fight great together. It’s a tough one to call, but I think Islam needs to continue its tight fit inside the top level of the lightweight division. “
Volkanovski will also have his pick in the featherweight division. One name that has emerged recently is Henry Cejudo, a former two-division champion who said he was inspired to retire after competing for the title at UFC 273.
