Ukraine needs $5 billion a month to keep its economy afloat, says IMF chief

WASHINGTON — Ukraine estimates it needs $5 billion each month to support essential government services and keep its economy afloat, raising the urgent need for nations to provide additional funds to the war-ravaged country, it said the head of the International Monetary Fund on Wednesday.

Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF’s managing director, told a news conference that the estimate for the next three months was provided by officials at Ukraine’s Treasury Ministry ahead of this week’s IMF-World Bank meeting. Financial support for the countries affected by the war in Ukraine is one of the main topics of the finance ministers and central bankers gathered in Washington.
