Umbrella Academy fans are ‘appalled’ as Allison steps over the line with Luther

Netflix fans The Umbrella Academy call the behavior of the character Allison “irremediable” because of a problematic scene with Luther in the show’s final season.

The Umbrella Academy is a fan-favorite show on the streaming service with an impressive 80 percent viewership Rotten tomatoes. It also has a dedicated fandom on multiple social media platforms.

The superhero series follows six estranged siblings with extraordinary abilities who are reunited after the death of their billionaire father. After uncovering shocking family secrets, they must work together to ward off an impending threat to humanity.

Adapted from musician Gerard Way’s comic book series of the same name, The Umbrella Academy is a relatable story about a dysfunctional, chosen Family. The characters are messy and their abilities are out of this world, but that’s what endears them to viewers.

However, fans can’t get over Allison’s – aka Number 3 or The Rumor – character arc in season three, in which she manipulates her powers to sexually assault her adoptive brother, Luther.

What happens in episode five between Allison and Luther?

Allison’s ability allows her to get people to do their bid by uttering a simple phrase, “I heard a rumor…” hence her superhero nickname, The Rumour.

Her time travel antics in season two have life-changing consequences in season three, and she returns to the present to find that she has lost her lover and daughter.

Heartbroken by her devastating loss, the once-stoic Allison turns to alcohol to numb her pain and isolates herself from her family. In the middle of the fifth episode, Luther turns to his sister. “I know you, Allison, and I know when you drown,” he says, continuing to hug her.

Mistaking Luther’s concern for romantic affection, Allison attempts to kiss him, a gesture he politely declines. However, it is important to note that the couple previously had romantic feelings for each other, which were revealed in the first season. Rather than accepting Luther’s lack of agreement, she then whispers, “I heard a rumor that you want me.”

Luther kisses her passionately, unable to control himself, and Allison finally yells at him to stop. The scene ends with Allison running away, leaving Luther confused and horrified at what happened.

A fan tweeted“God, I know Allison is suffering a lot, but there’s no reason to force Luther to want her, especially when he sees that he’s finally happy. I know she’s mentally unstable, but that’s no excuse for the abuse she committed. I am horrified.”

Another fan found the episode and subsequent defense of Allison’s behavior “triggering.” she tweeted: “Since I am a rape victim myself, unfortunately this is nothing new. Something must have happened. Q that. Can I get Cart Blanche? [sic] to do what I want now?”

Another noted that Allison’s character was taken there. They wrote, “I don’t think people realize that the show has been building Allison’s villain arc for a while.”
