can you walk up the stairs
When I turned 40 I invested in a personal trainer who works out twice a week. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done: I’m in the best shape I’ve been in 20 years.
Get your five a day?
My wife Edwina, 41, and I have a vegetable garden. In the summer, we eat trays of roasted vegetables for dinner. I rarely eat red meat now.
Ever been on a diet?
I’m 6ft 5″ and 15th, same as when I was 20. I went on a crash diet in 2008 when I was 10kg over the ejection seat weight limit on the RAF Typhoon (covering the 90th anniversary of the RAF). I lost it in ten days. But then I started focusing on food. It took a year or two to get over it. I think dieting is really bad for mental health.

Any vices?
I definitely drink too much – after work beer with the team, rosé in summer, red wine in winter.
Any family ailments?
mom and dad [his father is TV journalist Peter Snow, 84] are still very good. Mom’s parents lived to a ripe old age (90 and 95), but dads were smoking like chimneys and dying in their 50s.
Worst illness?
I had malaria when I was 20 on my gap year in Africa; I was hallucinating and couldn’t stand the sight of food.
Has something been removed?
My appendix ruptured on the last day of the Atlantic crossing in 2002 – I would have died if it had been in the middle of the voyage.
ever plastic surgery?
I would have said no, but now that I’m getting older I’m looking at it with renewed interest.
Deal with pain well?
Reasonably well. My lower back is often very sore from an old rowing injury. I am awaiting surgery for a ligament injury in my left knee.
Tried alternative remedies?
I firmly believe in science. I’m not a fan of homeopathy.
Ever been depressed?
When I started History Hit [his podcast] As a business, it was very stressful. I was concerned, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say I was depressed.
cure for a hangover?
Drink much water. I also try to distract myself – sailing or hiking. Lying on a sofa feeling sorry for yourself is the worst.
what keeps you awake
Major global crises – plague, covid, climate. I’m also worried about subscriber counts for my history channel!
Any phobias?
I don’t love snakes.
do you want to live forever
I love history – I’m fascinated to see where it leads, so I’d like to live forever.
