Thousands of American teenagers may have suffered heart inflammation after receiving a Covid shot, a study suggests.
Researchers found that up to 1 in 7,000 boys aged 12 to 15 developed myocarditis after receiving the Pfizer vaccine.
The condition — which is mild for most but can cause recurrent heart palpitations in rare cases — was most common after the second dose.
Covid is also mild for most teenagers, with just 1,745 Americans under the age of 18 dying from the disease, compared to more than 800,000 over the age of 50.
Experts said their paper does not prove people should stop getting vaccinated, adding that the benefits still “far outweigh the risks”.
Covid itself is known to cause myocarditis, with some studies knowing that it occurs through infection more often than after vaccination.
Vaccination of children has been extremely controversial during the pandemic due to the lower risks Covid poses to them compared to older adults.

Researchers from healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente studied 340 cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in hospitals in eight states.
Myocarditis is when the heart muscle becomes inflamed while pericarditis is when the lining of the heart becomes inflamed.
Overall, the side effect rate in all under 40s after a second dose was 1 in 30,000.
It was one in 200,000 after a first shot and one in 50,000 after a booster shot.
Experts didn’t try to explain the difference between the doses, although it may have something to do with the immune system responding a second time.
Myocarditis is triggered when the body’s immune system causes inflammation – often while fighting an infection such as Covid.
The findings were published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
For the paper, they monitored 6.9 million Covid vaccine recipients to see if they went to an emergency room with myocarditis.
This included symptoms such as tachycardia or shortness of breath within a week of vaccination.
All contestants received their jabs between December 14, 2020 and May 31, 2022 in eight US states including California, Colorado and Georgia.
A total of 119 cases of myocarditis were confirmed from 3.4 million people who received their second dose.
For those who received their first shot, 18 out of 3.5 million were administered.
And among the 1.8 million participants in the study, 77 had the disease.
Cases were included if they were detected within 7 days of vaccination and could be independently verified by investigators.
Children or teenagers aged 12 to 15 years were most likely to develop myocarditis after a second dose.
On the other hand, the side effects were rare in women aged 18 to 29 years.
The study did not look at the rates between Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, although Moderna recipients are thought to be at slightly higher risk.
It also did not include a control group, a population monitored for myocarditis after not receiving a Covid vaccine.
dr Kaiser Permanente’s Kristin Goddard, who led the research and others, said the numbers didn’t show people should stop getting Covid vaccines.
“Our results can be incorporated into a risk-benefit analysis, which has so far consistently found that the benefits of mRNA vaccination far outweigh the risks.
“Continued communication with patients and providers about the risk of myocarditis and pericarditis following Covid vaccination…is warranted.”
The data came from the Vaccine Safety Datalink System, which involves hospitals and emergency departments in eight states.
Some warned that the numbers may be underreporting, as some patients don’t realize they have myocarditis or pericarditis.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says myocarditis is rarely reported, but it’s most likely to occur in adolescents and young men.
An analysis conducted for the agency and published in April this year found that rates in boys aged 12 to 15 were as high as one in 600 after the second dose.
But it was much less common in women in the 18 to 29 age group, with very few identified cases.
This analysis did not include boosters.
