US Steel plans to switch factories to cast iron from steel

US Steel said it plans to end steel production at its Granite City, Ill. plant. and use the mill to produce cast iron.

Cast iron is an ore that is reduced to molten iron in a coal blast furnace. When it is cooled, it can be mixed with scrap and melted into new steel in an electric furnace. Cast iron supplies have tightened since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ended shipments from two countries that are the world’s biggest sellers of pig iron.
