The Velma animated series has achieved a new feat among IMDb-rated animated series, although it’s not exactly something worth celebrating.
On January 20, the show managed to earn an overall rating of 1.3/10 on the reviews database, making it the lowest-rated animated series in the site’s history. The score is based on reviews from IMDb users, who can submit their own rating of a particular show or movie, which feeds into an average score displayed on the actual website. At the time of writing this article, the score is based on more than 38,000 reviews submitted by users.
To make matters worse, the sheer volume of ratings the show has received. Compared to some of the other lowest rated shows you can browse on IMDB, Velma’s total number of negative reviews is many times higher with over 36,000 1-star reviews. Most of the other low-rated series, and especially the low-rated animated series, got their low rating based on only a few thousand negative reviews.
The only plus point is that this negative publicity seems to work in the show’s favour. Despite its low rating, it is currently the 17th most popular show on IMDb, alongside series like Game of Thrones, The White Lotus and Yellowstone. However, this is just a measure of how often people come to IMDb to look up a particular show that would be haunted given the show’s negative reception since it premiered.
For those who don’t know, Velma is a prequel series that follows the titular detective’s efforts to form Scooby-Doo’s Mystery Gang. Unlike its source material, however, it leans more towards the norms of adult cartoons, with elements such as violence, nudity, and profanity scattered throughout its episodes.
Velma is currently available to stream on HBO Max. For more information on Velma and all things Scooby-Doo, see the related articles below.
