This revelation could change the future of the MCU.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever editor Michael P. Shawver, in an interview with Newsweek, revealed some interesting tidbits about how things unfolded during the film’s editing, particularly related to the story of Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and Shuri ( Letitia Wright). the chemistry between them.
Both characters bond because their cultures, way of life and ideas about the outside world are not that different, and as Namor shows Shuri his homeland of Talocan, the chemistry between them is more than palpable. Shawver said that throughout the editing process, the editors (himself, Kelley Dixon and Jennifer Lame) and director Ryan Coogler kept thinking about the couple and their relationship and what could have become of it.
Sawver said of the relationship:
“They relate, and I think that every time we can identify with someone, there can be undertones of that kind, you know what I mean?”
He then added that Namor gave Shuri his mother’s bracelet:
“Honestly we need to stay sane and laugh a lot, especially in the tougher or serious moments, so we used to joke about how they were married now when he gave her that bracelet and she didn’t know. There’s a whole other movie where she’s like, ‘Wait, what, I’m the queen of Talokan now?’”
Other interesting tidbits Shawver shared in this interview concern the relationship between Shuri and Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), a lengthy scene in Talokan, and how difficult it was for him to edit the scenes honoring the late Chadwick Boseman.
While we wait to see what plans the MCU has for Namor and Shuri and their relationship, going forward we’ll view their interactions a little differently as they may already be husband and wife; a marriage made in Vibranium heaven.
