Wall Street banks’ trading desks are expected to continue delivering strong results as long as their bosses give them the opportunity.
In the first quarter, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley grew trading revenues by 4% year over year. Trading revenues at Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase declined just 2% and 3%, respectively. Given some of the gloomier outlook for trading earlier this year and the difficult comparison to a very strong quarter in the same period last year, it appears that the market rebound in March had a big impact.
