Jennifer Rourke competing against Lugo, shared the video on Twitter on June 25, 2022. The incident came as protests mounted across the country following the U.S. Supreme Court decision that found Roe v. Wade was lifted.

On twitterLugo describes himself as a “father, builder, and currently the Providence Police Officer.”

Here’s what you need to know:

Jennifer Rourke wrote that she was “violently assaulted.”

announced Rourke posted a short video clip on her Twitter page and wrote:

I am a reproductive rights organizer and a candidate for the State Senate. Last night, after I spoke at our Roe rally, my Republican opponent – a police officer – violently assaulted me.

That’s what it is to be a black woman running for office. I will not give up.

According to the Providence JournalHundreds of people gathered at the Rhode Island State Capitol to protest the overturning of the Roe v. Wade to protest.

The newspaper reported that chaos erupted at the protest, writing that “conflicts arose in the evening after apparent counter-protesters entered the area.”

The Providence Journal asked Lugo about Rourke’s claim. “I won’t deny it,” Lugo replied to the newspaper. “It was very messy, so I can’t really tell you now. Everything went very quickly.”

According to the Journal, Lugo claims that Rourke “got physical” with him first, which she denies. Lugo was not arrested, according to the newspaper, which quoted Rourke as saying: “To me, this feels like an act of political violence, similar to acts of violence that we have seen in the United States. I am a black woman running for office. There was no need, no need for any of this. I won’t give up.”

Lugo had previously entered the running for lieutenant governor before moving to the Senate. He told Ray-ality TV why he ran for office:

I run because I’ve seen the condition change for the worse over the past few years. I’ve seen a lot more violence, depression in our kids, the test results [are] declining mental health – there are drugs on our street[s]. We had just completely fueled our economy with COVID. The small shops were destroyed. We have a population decline. I just don’t think that’s the direction this state is supposed to go. We nearly hit record homicides last year. I have a lot of experience with this state when it comes to DCYF, when it comes to foster care, when it comes to social services, mental health, police. I believe I have a unique perspective when it comes to these issues. And I think I could help the state correct itself.

Providence Police confirmed one officer was under criminal investigation

in a tweet, The Providence Police wrote:

The PPD is criminally investigating the conduct of an off-duty officer last night during a protest where a woman was assaulted. The officer has served 3 years and was placed on paid administrative leave this morning pending a criminal investigation and regulatory review

Though the tweet doesn’t name Lugo as that officer, the Providence Police Department confirmed to ABC6 that the investigation relates to Lugo.
