WEEI Radio’s Chris Curtis hurls blatant insults at Mina Kimes on air

Radio is a tough job. There are hours of segments to fill, and on slow news days, plenty of time to rant about nothing off the top of your head – and that’s when things can get out of hand. That’s exactly what happened at WEEI Radio The Greg Hill Show On Wednesday. During a section on their “Top Five Nips,” the hosts discussed different types of hard liquor. The topic was seemingly going smoothly until producer Chris Curtis came in from the top rope and chimed in, saying, “I’d probably go with Mina Kimes.”
Not only was it a nose-hold-up comedy because it stank so badly nobody laughed at it, but its weak attempt at humor was also an ethnic slur. For those who don’t know, “Nip” is a racial slur for a Japanese person, while Mina Kimes is of Korean descent. It takes quite a bit of investment in Asian slurs to have them in your mental bank, and even worse judgment to test them on the air.
In an attempt to soften the blow, Curtis pinned his snide joke on a mix-up. WEEI Corporate announced this Chad Finn from Boston Globe that Curtis screwed up the joke by mixing up “Mina Kimes” with “Mila Kunis.”
It’s rare to get an apology that makes matters worse, but Curtis actually dipped his toe in poo twice. Slips of the tongue occur from time to time, but even the explanation boggles the mind. I’m still trying to figure out the meaning of the joke behind the apology that WEEI and Curtis spent all morning conjuring up—seemingly an ill-conceived attempt at a pun on “nip” as in “nipple”? But that seems like a stretch. It was really stupid.
To emphasize the absurdity of Curtis’ apology, Mina Kimes changed her Twitter profile picture to a headshot of Mila Kunis.
Mina Kimes seems to take it all in stride, but something tells me the next time Mila Kunis takes to Twitter, she’ll be confused.
