On Sunday, West Ham United fan page The Boleyn Boys conducted a Twitter poll asking supporters to vote on whether Lucas Digne would be a good signing in the January transfer window. 90% answered with a resounding ‘yes’.
As for the remaining ten per cent, it is clear that they have not been monitoring the £18m France international closely enough since his move to the Premier League from Barcelona in 2018. Or that they have been blinded to the wrongs. Arthur Masuaku’s accumulated mistakes by the drama led to a late winner against nasty rivals Chelsea in December.
What is indisputable is that, with David Moyes’ first-choice left-back Aaron Cresswell absent through injury, West Ham do not look like such a team.
Cresswell’s superb coordination remains a hugely important source of creativity for the Hammers and he remains a significant upgrade for Masuaku on both ends of the field.
Stylistically speaking, Digne and Cresswell are two almost identical peas in a soccer ball. Both are dead ball masters and enjoy nothing more than racing forward on overlap before slamming an inch-perfect pass into the box.
No full-back has provided more assists in the Premier League than Cresswell last season (8). But Digne, with seven men, was not far behind.
And, according to Letters, Moyes could return to his old base to provide Digne with an exit from Everton in the final few weeks of the January transfer window.
There’s no reason to believe they can’t play together in the same starting lineup; Digne looks well-suited to the full-back role while Cresswell produced some of his best performances under Moyes at left-back in a three-man formation.
Digne is expected to leave Goodison Park this month after teaming up with Rafa Benitez and the subsequent arrival of Vitaliy Mykolenko from Dinamo Kiev.
One wonders how many Everton supporters would like to see Benitez go before their deadly left-back. 90%, perhaps?
