West Ham want Manchester United youngster, Gary Neville says he’s ‘really good’

West Ham United are keen to bring Manchester United defender Di’Shon Bernard to the London stadium this summer after impressing at Hull City.

The Sunday Mirror reports (17/04, p.71) who claim West Ham are now planning a move to land Bernard.

West Ham scouts reportedly checked Bernard ahead of a potential deal.

David Moyes sees great potential in Bernard and while Manchester United rates him highly, West Ham believe they can offer a path to first-team football.

That has to address Bernard, whose path at United seems difficult at best.

Bernard, 21, was born in Wandsworth in west London and, like Declan Rice, rose through the ranks at Chelsea.

United rushed to sign Bernard in 2017 and he has made just one appearance in the club’s first-team.

Bernard was on loan at Salford City last season and played 31 games.

Gary Neville was effusive in his praise of Bernard in the class of ’92: full-timewho praises his aggressive defensive style.

“Di’Shon Bernard has done really well since he got into central defence,” Neville said. “On the front foot, step forward, push up a bit, makes us more aggressive. I would love to sign him full-time but I don’t know if United would let him go.”

“He’s the type of player we need. Young, hungry, wants to make a career.”

“We couldn’t just replace him; Players that pass as well as he can, as well as he can walk, the physical fitness that he has, the talent, the ability to read the game – he’s a really good player,” he added.

That season Bernard was loaned out to Hull City in the Championship. The youngster mainly played as a centre-back but has also played at right-back.

That versatility could be why Moyes is keen to bring Bernard to the London stadium and a return to the capital has the appeal.

Any interest from West Ham in a United player will see questions raised about a bid for Declan Rice.

In Bernard’s case, we’d suggest his career would be better served at West Ham than at United – and hopefully Rice isn’t involved.
