Serena Williams made her Wimbledon 2022 debut today, June 28, and some fans were confused by what she saw on her face during her match against Harmony Tan.
After a 12-month hiatus, it looked highly unlikely that Serena Williams would compete at Wimbledon in 2022.
However, after an appearance at Eastbourne International last week, Williams was accepted into this year’s tournament as a wildcard at the last minute.
The 23-time Grand Slam winner initially turned down the option to join Wimbledon through a clause allowing seniors who missed out due to injury to play, but was able to do her fitness lap just in time.
But while she’s enjoying Wimbledon 2022, some fans have noticed some markings on her face.
So what’s on Serena Williams’ face?
Well, in case you haven’t seen Williams at Wimbledon this year, there are actually two black stickers on her face.
The stickers, placed around her cheekbones on the right side of her face, are said to help counteract a sinus problem she’s suffering from, as per The times.
The stickers are said to help relieve pain in the sinus area, similar to how soccer players wear duct tape to support their leg muscles.
Williams was first spotted with the tape in Eastbourne last week but has yet to officially address it in the press.
Williams’ earlier sinus comments
Though Williams has yet to comment on her face band, she has previously addressed her issues with her sinuses.
Back in 2007, Williams told the press at a sinus medication launch campaign about her sinus problems and how it affected her career: “I suffer from sinuses. Playing tennis or doing just about anything every day isn’t easy when you have sinuses.
“You feel a lot of pressure, congestion and pain and training for Grand Slams like Wimbledon and the French Open isn’t easy.”
Williams offered her support for those struggling with their sinuses, suggesting keeping your drinks ice-free and recommending taking hot showers regularly to try to clear your airwaves.
Williams will make his first appearance at Wimbledon 2022
As we near the end of Day 2 of Wimbledon 2022, Williams is currently playing in her first match of this year’s tournament.
At the time of writing, the seven-time Wimbledon winner is currently in the third set against world No. 133 Harmony Tan.
After losing the first set 5-7, Williams equalized in the second set and won 6-1.
