Steven Stayner was just seven years old when he was kidnapped by Kenneth Parnell – and the series focuses on the horrors he endured and delves further into the criminal case.

In 1980, Stayner—then aged 14—managed to escape the clutches of his kidnapper while rescuing another of Parnell’s kidnapping victims, five-year-old Timothy White.

What happened to Kenneth Parnell?

The abuse Parnell inflicted on Stayner was exposed when Steven and Timothy managed to escape and hitchhike to safety.

“I regret nothing”

In a 2003 interview with East Bay ExpressParnell shared new insights into the Steven Stayner kidnapping case and said he felt guilty “in a way”.

Coolly he said: “I have no regrets. Of course, I’ve had a few years where I’ve enjoyed being with Stayner, so I have no regrets.”

When the interviewer asked about other things he might regret, Parnell actually chuckled before saying, “Spending a lot of time, for one thing, you know, in prison. But then the problems that the Stayner family had.”

When asked if he ever thought that the Stayner family didn’t know where their son was, he replied, “Yes.”

Kenneth Parnell was already a predator

Before Stayner’s kidnapping in 1972, Parnell had previously been convicted in 1952 of molesting an eight-year-old boy in Bakersfield, California.

He only served three years for that crime, and when he kidnapped Steven Stayner, Parnell was a registered sex offender, Oxygen reports.
