Hollywood’s biggest night took an unexpected turn this year. After that, a fight between Will Smith and Chris Rock broke out on national television Saturday night live Alum made a sickening joke about Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, during the 94th Academy Awards.
During the live show, which aired March 27, 2022, Chris made a comment about Jada being “GI Jane,” seemingly in reference to her shaved head. After the comment was made, Jada was seen visibly upset about it and rolled her eyes. Will initially laughed at the joke, but within moments he could be seen running onto the stage to punch Chris in the face. Although the live broadcast quickly began censoring the exchanges between Will and Chris that followed, uncensored footage that was broadcast internationally revealed what was really being said between the actors. “Will Smith just blew me away,” Chris said in disbelief. In the distance, Will could be heard yelling at the comedian not to talk about Jada. “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth,” he yelled twice.
According to Vanity Fair senior correspondent Rebecca Ford, actor Denzel Washington pulled Will “aside to talk to him” after his attack on Chris. Ford further revealed that Denzel also went over to comfort Jada. “Denzel now has his arm around Jada and is kneeling beside her even though the show has started,” added Ford tweet.
But what really happened between the two to evoke such a reaction from Will? Read on below to find out the real reason behind Chris and Will’s fight at the 2022 Oscars.
What happened to Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars?
While Chris insisted his comment was just a joke, it’s no surprise the Smiths thought it was in bad taste. Jada has spoken extensively about her struggles with hair loss, first opening up about her experience in an episode of her Facebook Watch series in 2018. Conversation at the Red Table. “It was terrifying when it started,” Jada said at the time. “I was in the shower one day with only a handful of hair in my hands and I was like, oh my god, am I going bald?”
Will’s wife later learned that her condition was known as alopecia, which causes sudden hair loss in patches and can lead to complete baldness. After months of hiding her scalp under turbans, Jada made the bold decision to shave her head after being inspired by her daughter Willow. The couple shared a selfie on Instagram in July 2021, which Jada captioned, “Willow got me ’cause it was time to let go BUT… my 50s are divinely lit with this shed.”
Despite Jada’s public struggle with her condition, Chris decided to shed some light on the situation at the Oscars. Understandably, Will didn’t like the comedian making fun of his wife on live TV – hence the mind-blowing punch for everyone to see.
