What is a Grand Slam in F1 when Charles Leclerc starts his career in Australia?

Charles Leclerc won a Grand Slam at the Australian Grand Prix in F1, but what did the Ferrari driver have to do to win it?

If there was any doubt before, it’s over now.

Ferrari and Charles Leclerc are good in this title fight and after just three races it could well be her and her to lose.

Leclerc has 71 of 78 points at the start of the season, with second-best George Russell on 37.

Max Verstappen – who retired has 25 with Lewis Hamilton now at 28 after a fourth place finish in Melbourne.

But nobody could touch Leclerc in Albert Park, the Monegasse drove to a fourth career win.

But he also clinched a Grand Slam in the race, but what does an F1 driver have to do to get that accolade?

What is a Grand Slam in F1?

Also known as the Grand Chelem in Formula 1, the Grand Slam is incredibly difficult to achieve.

A driver must complete the following to win a Grand Slam in F1.

  • take pole position
  • Post the fastest race lap
  • Win the race
  • Lead each round from start to finish

Leclerc took pole on Saturday with a comfortable lead of 0.286 seconds over Verstappen.

He set the fastest lap on the final tour after encouraging his engineer to allow him to push for the extra bonus point that came with it.

And he never led the race either, leading all 58 laps from start to finish.

It is Leclerc’s fourth victory after his GP wins in Belgium and Italy in 2019 and the 2022 season opener in Bahrain.

Who has the most?

That’s the rarity of a Grand Slam in F1, it’s very unusual, although a few well-known names have the most.

Jim Clark has a record eight Grand Slams, including three each in 1963 and 1965 – the years in which he won his two world titles.

Lewis Hamilton has six of the current drivers.

These came in 2014 in Malaysia, 2015 in Italy, 2017 in China, Canada and Great Britain and in 2019 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Michael Schumacher got five, Ayrton Senna and Sebastian Vettel four.

Vettel’s last was the 2013 Korean Grand Prix.

Verstappen clinched his first Grand Slam in F1 at the 2021 Austrian Grand Prix – the second of two races at the Red Bull Ring in his first year of the championship.
