What does libertine mean?

So what exactly is the meaning of a libertine? A libertine is a man who indulges in pleasurable activities without regard to the consequences his actions may have.

Cambridge dictionary defines the term as “a person, usually a man, who has few moral principles and has sexual relations with many people”.

The term first appears in episode 1 when the press brand depicts James Whitehouse as a libertine. This comes after his affair with a colleague was publicly exposed.

The term may also refer to the Libertine Social Club of which James was a member while at Oxford University. Known for its unruly parties, this is an all-male social club that included James and the Prime Minister.

Is the Libertine Club real?

The Libertine Club featured in the show is fictional, although based on Oxford University’s infamous Bullingdon Club.

Like its fictional counterpart, The Bullingdon Club is a men-only club. It’s known for its rowdy dinner parties and debauchery.

The club has inspired several fictional adaptations, including the 2014 film Riot Club.

Members of the Bullingdon Club tend to come from wealthy families and often go on to hold positions of power in British politics.
