What is an Egyptian jackal?

Egyptian jackals traditionally belong to the wolf family, whose successors today are the Egyptian wolves.

Egyptian jackals also inspired a more mythological view of the animal, calling them “hounds of death.” However, these death hounds were either depicted as fully animal or had a jackal’s head on a human body.

The most iconic jackal-like figure in ancient Egypt is Anubis, depicted half man, half jackal and known as the god of death.

In Egyptian mythology, Anubis played a role in the process of death alongside Ammit – the deity worshiped by Arthur Harrow. In the Egyptian underworld, Anubis would weigh the heart of the recently deceased person against the pen of Ma’at in the Hall of Two Truths. If the heart was not pure, Ammit was there to devour them, denying them access to Osiris and immortality.

Ammit’s power to summon death hounds to hunt down evildoers moon knighttherefore makes a lot of sense and is consistent with Egyptian mythology.

Why can only Steven see her?

Steven Grant / Marc Spector can only see the jackals because he is the avatar of a god who sort of elevates the valley above the visibility of these creatures.

The only other person who can see the jackals is Arthur Harrow as he is the one who summons them and is Ammit’s avatar.

Layla, Arthur’s followers, and the shocked civilians of London cannot see the beast because they are purely human and have no spiritual connections to Egyptian gods.
