What is “season” in Bridgerton?

‘The season’ refers to the spring and summer period when the upper classes of British society resided in London rather than at their country houses and held various events to get their sons and daughters married.

These events often took the form of balls, dinner parties and fundraisers, all of which took place in the London mansions of the nobility.

The season offered children of the nobility an opportunity to be introduced to society, with a traditional event being the Queen Charlotte’s Ball, where debutantes were introduced to society before the monarch.

This tradition developed in the 17thth and 18th 19th century, but began to decline in the aftermath of World War I as people abandoned their London homes.

Eventually Queen Charlotte’s Ball was abolished by Queen Elizabeth II in 1958 and the ‘season’ was a thing of the past.
