Spain’s World Cup victory should be a moment of celebration for the country. But now players are boycotting the national team and employees of the Spanish Football Association are resigning in protest by federation president Luis Rubiales, who was provisionally suspended by international football’s governing body FIFA after he allegedly kissed a player on the lips against her will.
Midfielder Jenni Hermoso said she did not consent to the kiss, which took place at the post-match ceremony, and that she and her family were pressured by the federation to acquit the Rubiales. Football players around the world and the Spanish government have expressed their support for Hermoso.
Now the Spanish Football Association has accused Hermoso of lying and has announced that it will take legal action. A series of photos of Hermoso and Rubiales were also released, a statement local media called “strange.”
Here’s what you should know about the controversy that sparked a crisis in Spanish football.
