When do the stores open on Black Friday?
SPARTANBURG, SC (WSPA) – Trying to speed up your holiday shopping? Unfortunately, you may have to wait until Black Friday (although many retailers have already started their business earlier this month) – many stores are closing their doors for Thanksgiving this year.

However, everything changed with the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, many major retail stores announced they would remain closed on Thanksgiving and open sometime on Black Friday.
In 2021 and 2022, major retail stores remained closed on Thanksgiving and opened early on Black Friday.
Now, in 2023, many major retail stores are sticking to this trend and remaining closed on the holidays.
Here’s a look at major retailers that have confirmed they’re skipping Thanksgiving this year. We’ve also included when they will reopen on Black Friday:
Best buy
Best Buy stores will remain closed for Thanksgiving this year, the retailer confirmed on its website website. You can check your store’s Black Friday opening hours online store locator.
Costco
Like most major holidays, Costco warehouses are closed on Thanksgiving. They will be open again for Black Friday, but opening times may vary. You can check the opening hours of your warehouse on-line.
Dick’s Sporting Goods
I hope you’ve got your ball ready for the family Thanksgiving football game: Dick’s Sporting Goods stores will be closing, a representative told Nexstar. On Black Friday, stores will reopen at 6 a.m. You can confirm your store’s opening hours on-line.
Hobby Lobby
As with major holidays, Hobby Lobby will be closed on Thanksgiving. Stores will reopen at 8 a.m. on Black Friday, the company confirmed on-line.
Home Depot
A representative confirmed to Nexstar that Home Depot stores will remain closed on Thanksgiving but will reopen at 6 a.m. on Black Friday.
Household goods and home sense
You need to hold off on shopping for home accessories and furnishings until Black Friday; Both Home Goods and Homesense stores will be closed for Turkey Day, a representative told Nexstar. Most stores will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday. You can confirm your store’s opening hours online.
IKEA
All IKEA stores are closed on Thanksgiving and store hours may vary on Black Friday. You can find the opening hours of your location on-line.
JCPenney
JCPenney will be closed on Thanksgiving, a representative told Nexstar, but will reopen at 5 a.m. on Black Friday.
Kohl’s
While Kohl’s stores will be closed on Thanksgiving, they will open bright and early at 5 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative tells Nexstar.
Lowes
Lowe’s will close its doors on Thanksgiving and reopen at 6 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative confirmed to Nexstar.
Macy’s
Macy’s is giving employees the day off on Thanksgiving, but will be open again on Black Friday from 6 a.m. to 10:59 p.m.
Marshall’s
The Marshalls will be closed on Thanksgiving. Most stores will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative tells Nexstar.
Petco
Petco stores will be closed on Thanksgiving but will reopen at 8 a.m. on Black Friday, a representative told Nexstar.
PetSmart
A representative confirmed to Nexstar that PetSmart stores will be closed on Thanksgiving. On Black Friday they will reopen at 7am.
REI
Unlike other retailers on this list, REI will be closed on Thanksgiving and Black Friday. In an email to Nexstar, the company said it would instead pay its more than 16,000 employees to “spend time outside with family and friends on Black Friday” “instead of focusing on profits and sales.”
Sam’s club
Sam’s Club confirmed on-line that its warehouses will be closed for Thanksgiving. On Black Friday, shops will be open again during normal opening hours.
Goal
CEO Brian Cornell announced Target stores would do this earlier this year remain closed again on Thanksgiving. Shops will reopen at 6 a.m. Friday.
TJ Maxx
A representative confirmed to Nexstar that TJ Maxx stores will be closed on Thanksgiving. Most stores will reopen at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.
Walmart
For the fourth consecutive year, Walmart stores nationwide will remain closed for Thanksgiving, CEO John Furner said confirmed earlier this year. On Black Friday the shops will be open again during regular opening hours.
