South Dakota State looks to defend its lead at the top of the Summit League against rival North Dakota State.
SDSU boasts the second highest scoring team in the nation with 88 points per game. Jackrabbits can add up to anyone who has 74 points higher in each of their games than their Power Five opponent.
The NDSU will have to slow down a Jackrabbit foul that consistently put up big numbers despite the absence of top scorer Noah Freel. He averaged 18 points per game.
“Honestly, we have many ways to score goals,” said Jackrabbits head coach Eric Henderson. each KEYC. “We have many players who can score goals in different ways. So I love our flexibility, I love our flexibility. We’re just trying to look at what we’re doing well, why we’re playing well in attack and what can we do a little bit better.”
SDSU has double-digit scorers with Baylor Scheierman, Douglas Wilson and Zeke Mayo. Scheierman averaged 14.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Wilson scored 14.7 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per night. Mayo added 10 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
For SDSU, wiping out Bison will help secure the conference season title and top seed in the conference tournament. The Jackrabbits won the conference tournament last in 2018 and advanced to the NCAA tournament.
SDSU entered the game Saturday on a nine-game winning streak, including a win over Bison 90-86 on December 30. Bison had a three-game winning streak.
Rocky Kreuser leads Bison with 15.8 points and 8 rebounds per game.
“Every game is important in the conference,” Kreuser told the media on Tuesday. “So we just looked at the next opportunity.”
This season has not been easy for Bison when top strikers Sam Griesel and Grant Nelson were injured. Bison also lost Andrew Morgan to injury.
“You have a mentality that you’re going to play the next day and then get the news about the game being postponed but when is it only possible to worry about what we can control,” Kreuser said. per KVRR. “Keeping that mentality right when it comes to all the games and then when you leave it all there you can look down at the scoreboard and see if you win.”
Bison looks to get in the best health possible and make a big run at the end of the season. The NDSU won the Summit League last season after qualifying for the NCAA two previous seasons in 2019 and 2020.
