Who created Earth Day?

Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day. The idea was first proposed by activist John McConnell at a Unesco conference in San Francisco in 1969.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970 after Senator Nelson instituted a nationwide teach-in in response to concerns about the state of the environment.

A young activist named Denis Hayes was recruited to organize the teach-in and April 22nd was chosen between spring break and final exams to maximize student participation.

Congress officially authorized the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency, a new federal agency created to address environmental issues.

Google celebrates Earth Day

Google has marked Earth Day with satellite imagery of the impact of the climate crisis on our planet between 1986 and recent years.

The time-lapse features stunning images of coral bleaching and melting glaciers to remind people of the importance of protecting the earth.

One of the images shows the effects of bark beetle infestation on the Harz forests due to higher temperatures and drought in Elend, Germany.

Earth Day is a day when people can come together as a community and take action for a better living environment by taking small steps such as: B. cleaning up their neighborhood and planting more trees.
