Chris Rock jibes GI Jane at Oscars
Comedian Chris Rock took the stage to present the award for Best Documentary and took the opportunity to toast some of the famous faces in the audience. Jada Pinkett Smith was one such celebrity that Rock wanted to poke fun at.
Rock said in front of the audience and viewers at home, “Jada, can’t wait for GI Jane 2.” This was an obvious reference to Pinkett Smith’s recent buzzcut.
Soon after Rock’s joke, Will Smith made his way onto the stage apparently “slapped” Chris Rock. Returning to his place in the crowd, Smith said repeatedly, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”
“Wow, Will Smith just blew me away,” Rock replied.
Who is GI Jane?
Chris Rock’s GI Jane comment here references the 1997 film of the same name. Directed by Ridley Scott, the action film stars Demi Moore as Jordan O’Neill, a female lieutenant who has been given the opportunity to join the Navy SEALs .
In GI Jane, Demi Moore shaved her hair into a buzz cut. She did this specifically for the role to reflect her character’s role in the armed forces. Moore was also subjected grueling military training to better understand Lt Jordan O’Neill.
Controversial Oscar joke shines a light on Jada Pinkett Smith’s alopecia
Unlike Moore, Jada Pinkett Smith didn’t shave her head to fit a character’s role. Pinkett Smith has spoken openly to the public about her struggles with alopecia, a hair loss condition. She revealed her diagnosis in 2018 and in recent years she has worn her hair cropped short, often covered with headscarves.
In July 2021, Pinkett Smith revealed that she had shaved her hair completely with the encouragement of her daughter Willow.
