The young actor slips into the role of a former victim of the grabber. He has spoken to and assisted Finney (played by Mason Thames) throughout the events of the film, courtesy of the titular phone.

If you haven’t seen the movie and don’t want to see any spoilers, you should read on after watching The Black Phone.

During a recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, revealed Scott that the ending was different at first. As you know, Robin ends up arriving as a ghost, but that wasn’t planned and the actor had actually gone home before the decision was made:

“In the script, Robin wasn’t in the room. It was just a phone call. A day or two before we were filming that… it suddenly hit me out of nowhere. I was like, ‘Oh, the audience wants to see that boy again. We must see him again. It won’t feel right if we don’t see him again. I thought, ‘Where’s the kid?’ and they said, ‘We just flew him home.’”

He continued, “I was like, ‘Bring him back. You have to fly it back.’”

Scott admitted that they ended up doing everything in one shot and that he thinks it’s one of the best scenes in the film: “I think a good director always has an antenna to hear what this film really wants . When you do that, sometimes you can make decisions bigger than yourself.”

The Black Telephone is in theaters now.
