Sherwood pays a touching tribute to Keith “Froggy” Frogson

At the end of another tense and gripping episode, Sherwood took a moment to offer a touching tribute just before the credits roll.

In a final title card, the tribute read:

“In loving memory of Keith ‘Froggy’ Frogson – July 5, 1942 to July 19, 2004.”

Keith Frogson was one of two people murdered in July 2004, with the case providing Sherwood writer James Graham with inspiration for the series.

Frogson was a former miner who lived at Annesley Woodhouse in Nottinghamshire until he was killed aged 62.

On July 19, 2004, Keith was found dead on his own doorstep after being attacked with a crossbow and samurai sword.

Keith, known to his friends by the nickname “Froggy,” was heavily involved in the 1984 miners’ strike and many initially suspected it played a role in his death. However, the police investigation determined that this was false, as the killer’s motivation had nothing to do with his mining history.

In the series, Alun Armstrong’s character, Gary Jackson, is loosely based on the real-life Keith Frogson.

Who Killed Keith Frogson?

Keith Frogson was killed by Robert Boyer, another former miner and a neighbor of Keith’s.

Robert, who turned 42 in 2004, tracked Keith for several weeks to track his movements and choose the perfect moment to attack.

On the evening of July 19, Boyer followed Keith home from the local pub before shooting him with a crossbow and hitting him multiple times with a samurai sword.

After the attack, Boyer hid in the woods near Annesley Woodhouse and reappeared two weeks later attempting to set fire to the Frogson family home.

The search for Robert Boyer and another killer on the run in the same woods became one of the largest police manhunts in history, involving more than 450 police officers, 30 trained dogs and helicopters equipped with heat-detection technology across the UK at a cost of £1.5million.

On August 15, after nearly months of searching, police finally tracked Boyer to a shelter built deep in the woods.

Despite initial suspicions attributing the killing to divisions stemming from the miners’ strikes, it emerged that Robert Boyer was mentally ill and believed Keith Frogson was after him and plotting to demolish his home.

Boyer pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was given an indefinite hospital order instead of being sent to prison due to his mental health.

As of 2022, Robert Boyer will be around 60 years old and is still under medical supervision, they say Manchester evening news.

Who else was murdered?

The second murder victim to inspire the Sherwood story was Chanel Taylor.

Chanel, a 23-year-old hairdresser from the nearby village of Huthwaite, was murdered just seven weeks after marrying her partner Lee Taylor.

Although Chanel had walked her down the aisle a few weeks earlier, she was killed by her own father, 55-year-old Terry Rodgers.

terry cloth allegedly had a history of abuse towards his wife and children and this culminated in him shooting his daughter dead in her own home, her body being found by her husband Lee on July 30th.

After the murder, Terry hid in the same woods as Robert Boyer outside Annesley Woodhouse until he was arrested a few weeks later.

Rodgers was due to be tried for murder in March 2006 but died a month earlier at the age of 57 after going on a hunger strike.

In the Sherwood series, Joanne Froggatt’s character, Sarah Vincent, is based on Chanel Taylor.

Sherwood is available to stream now BBC iPlayer after the series ended BBC One on Tuesday, June 28th, 2022.
