Tiger King star and Dancing With the Stars alum Carole Baskin shares why she’s quit reality TV after her stint on the show.

During an interview with Audacy’s “eye on the communityBaskin spoke to presenter Pepper about why she won’t be part of reality TV anymore.

“No,” she said when asked about participating in other reality shows in the future. “There are a lot of things I’ve had to do to keep the message alive about why we had to pass the Big Cat Public Safety Act, and now that that’s done I hope to disappear into a life of darkness.”

Baskin explained the Big Cat Rescue’s mission

Baskin became a household name in 2020 following the release of the Netflix docuseries Tiger King. The documentaries delved deep into the disappearance of Baskin’s ex-husband, Jack “Don” Lewis.

“Tiger King” told the story of Joe Exotic, an exotic animal zoo owner and black market pet dealer who was arrested in 2018 for animal cruelty and a contract killing against Carole Baskin, and his downfall that ended up leading people to theories about Carole Baskin as well to believe. In January 2022, according to NPRJoe Exotic was again sentenced to 21 years in prison.

Don Lewis was last seen on August 18, 1997 and disappeared without a trace.

“His van was found at a Pasco County airport with the keys on the floor. Deputies searched the wildlife sanctuary, then named Wildlife on Easy Street, and flew to Costa Rica to look for clues to the Tampa Bay Tribune. “They never found him.”

During the Audacy podcast, Baskin spoke about how people misunderstood her and Big Cat Rescue after Tiger King.

“People rescuing these big cats from horrific situations are not the problem,” Baskin shared. “It’s the people who breed them, exploit them, lie to their customers that they’re conservationists, and then discard these animals into private ownership that’s the problem and they should be angry with them.”

The reality TV personality later shared, “”The other thing I wanted to say that people really didn’t understand after watching ‘Tiger King’ is that they mistakenly believe that tigers and other big cats are a are an endangered species, which of course you should breed more of. But captive breeding does nothing to save them in the wild.”
