This made the series premiere the second most watched entertainment cable show on Sunday and the third most watched show of the week.
But filming the multi-generational family drama got off to a rocky start for Chyler Leigh. In interviews prior to the show’s launch, Leigh admitted she was incredibly nervous about filming with MacDowell, who plays her mother on the series.
“To be honest I was so intimidated to meet her because she’s such an icon,” Leigh said New York Live.
in a (n Interview with Access Hollywood, Leigh said her nervousness caused her to keep forgetting her lines on the first day of shooting.
“In my first scene with her, I couldn’t remember my lines because I just kept staring at her face and I was like, ‘I’m in love with you,’ and I didn’t know what to do,” Leigh said. “She made me feel a lot more comfortable because she dropped a few lines, but I think maybe she did that on purpose to make me feel better. She’s such a girl!”
Leigh revealed her nerves got the better of her, although she and MacDowell, who is in her fifth decade as a successful film actress, bonded instantly on set.
“I was so nervous to be honest but she’s just the prettiest,” Leigh told Access Hollywood. “She is so inviting. The moment we met she just walked up to me and gave me this huge hug. I’m a hugger, but you never really know what to expect from people. But she just came up and it was this wonderfully crushing hug.”
Leigh continued, “We just talked and, you know, we had so much to talk about and … our biggest thing we said to each other was, ‘That’s such a gift.’ It’s an opportunity for us to work really hard to tell a great story, but also have a lot of fun.”
Andie MacDowell was impressed with both of her The Way Home co-stars
Although Leigh may have been incredibly nervous, MacDowell didn’t realize it when he first met her.
“I found Chyler when I first met her… I was like, ‘Oh my god, this woman is powerful. She’s a really strong woman,'” MacDowell said during a Facebook Live session with the cast before the show’s premiere.
And while Leigh couldn’t stop staring at MacDowell, it turns out that MacDowell couldn’t stop staring at Laflamme-Snow, who plays her granddaughter on the series.
“I looked Sadie in the eye and just couldn’t stop looking at her,” MacDowell said. “We would have to read everything and I would just stare at her. I mean, she’s very talented, I don’t want to take away her talent as an actress. But she is so beautiful.”
When Leigh lashed out that the young actress “has a light” for her, MacDowell agreed, “Yes, she has a light! That’s it. That’s it. It has a light and it just shines.”
Meanwhile, Laflamme-Snow, who plays 15-year-old Alice Landry, said during the Facebook Live session that she was “incredibly excited” to be filming with MacDowell and Leigh but didn’t realize how close they had become on set .
“I don’t think I really understood how much of a unit we were going to be,” she said. “In this job you meet your heroes, you meet people you look up to, but you don’t always become a family unit. And I think that was a really, really special opportunity.”
She continued, “As someone who’s relatively new to being in a family with Chyler and Andie — because we’ve always talked about history, talked about our relationships, talked about process — and I felt just very, very welcome and reassured and supported.”
Laflamme-Snow reaffirmed their gratitude for this connection in one Interviewed by Yahoo.
“They have been great friends and mentors to me throughout the process, and the Landry family dynamic between the three of us is strong,” she said.
