Why did Sergio Perez withdraw from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix?

Sergio Perez has found the top spot in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after helping teammate Max Verstappen win the title, but why is Perez retiring? What had happened to him?

After Lewis Hamilton got the jump with track runner Verstappen at the start, Perez was right behind the leaders in third place.

Verstappen was soon pulled into the pitstop as his soft tires began to wear out, and Hamilton responded shortly after.

Red Bull then used Perez as a shield, allowing Verstappen to get back into the race.

In the end, Red Bull retired Perez’s car, but why is Perez retiring to Abu Dhabi?

Perez plays a team game

Red Bull didn’t have enough speed to keep up with Hamilton and Mercedes at Yas Marina.

#44 Mercedes was the faster car of the day, as evidenced by Hamilton holding the gap eight seconds after both championship contenders made their pitstops.

But Red Bull elected to run Perez ‘long term’ and used him as a shield against Hamilton – to keep him up.

This is all within the rules and fair game in the middle of a title war.

Perez performed excellently when holding Hamilton, leading Verstappen 8 seconds, just 1 second before Verstappen.

Number 33 calls him a “legend” for his defensive abilities.

Perez then settled into a quiet race, with another podium there to claim as Hamilton and Verstappen finished.

Under Nicholas Latifi’s crash safety car, Red Bull pitted both drivers for the soft tyres.

However, next time, Perez again pitted and was eliminated from the race.

With the race in full swing until the final shootout, Red Bull didn’t want to risk having Perez stop on the track.

If you have dived, the yellow flag will fly, overtaking is prohibited.

It would leave Verstappen with no chance of overtaking Hamilton for the title.

That’s why Perez withdrew from the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Mexican is 4th in the 2021 rankings with 190 points.

He clinched a win in Azerbaijan in his first season at Red Bull, and added four more crowns to his most successful season in F1 to date.
